Feeling emo

Right about now I've been home for a little over 24 hours, and already I am feeling emo and a little bad about myself. Emily came over tonight and we talked for 3ish hours, about life and old friends, etc etc. I miss how things used to be, but at the same time, I want to go forward and just skip over this summer. Ah to be back at school with no rules (comparatively- okay seriously... midnight curfew. lame)

I know I should go to bed but I just can't seem to bring myself to that point. Maybe I'll watch a movie or something. I should just read a book.

I am listening to the theme from Schindler's List, and missing BYU and everything. I want to write music too... I want to call a few friends and just make things better. I wish I could just make everyones decisions for them, but then that would take away their agency. I know people make mistakes, but I just wish they would make less of them. It scares me to death for when I have children. They need their freedom, but what if they start making horribly stupid decisions?

SCAAARY. freaking scary.

yesterday I was really restless as my dad and I approached the Columbia River Gorge, so I decided to do 40 minutes of dancing/exercising with my arms. There was this nerdy kid in some red chevy car's passenger seat who we kept on passing and who passed us several times as well, and every time our cars passed each other he'd dance. and we had this little dancing party down the I-84 :)

I think Emily and I will hang out tonight. I should call Kristin too. I miss all my friends from here, but honestly, I kind of wish I was still back at school, because life at home is kind of boring at times. Its only 2:30pm and I totally feel like I've been up for FOREVER.

and I want to work out.

but I have no gym membership. SAD DAY.

Favorite Professors

So I totally love my Civilizations Professor, and I'm totally taking a class from him next year- French and Italian Cinema. And I can't believe I said totally twice in that last sentence.

hahaha. no seriously Dr. Lee is pretty awesome.

Griggs was cool too.I am pretty sure he was Indiana Jones in a past life. And I am almost positive he is Dumbledore, only JK Rowling got it wrong, and he is actually not gay.



And last but not least my English professor, Kerry Spencer, who has possibly the funniest blog ever.

truth

Ummmmmm So I am studying for my H259 final, and for it we have to write about what 'truth' is.

In Greek, there are three types of knowledge-
1. Oida: knowledge from sensory experience
2. Episteme: knowledge acquired by reason, deduction, induction; philosophical knowledge
3. Gnosis: Knowledge that comes beyond your senses- such as revelation, intuition, dreams

Interesting. As time has progressed, there has been a shift towards a more Episteme way of gaining knowledge rather than Gnosis.

Scientific truth is through the scientific method, and mathematical truth is through proofs.

Tonight Rachel and I went to the Museum of Peoples and Cultures. We saw the Kachina (sp?) dolls and it was pretty cool.

I am quite exhausted from finals. I have 3 to take tomorrow, but supposedly I shouldnt worry about my german one, or my civ one for that matter. I just have to study my behind off tonight for the Physical Science test.

Last night Lara and I watched Das Leben der Anderen, The Lives of Others. It is SUCH a good film. If you have the chance, there are a few scenes you might want to skip through, but seriously, its pretty amazing.

I decided to sign up for a class about Tolerance and Persecution in early modern Europe for next fall. It apparently looks very in-depth at the holocaust etc, and I find that stuff fascinating. So it will be my extra class, bumping up my credit hours to 18.

I drive home on friday morning. My dad is flying out here to drive home with me. I am really glad he is able to, because I wasn't looking forward to driving home by myself.

This post is really just about rambling because I am procrastinating studying for my science test. I do NOT want to take it. :/ The only good thing about that class was that the TA was rather attractive and my friends in the class were cool.

I will miss people from my classes this semester. It was nice to have Rachel in my civ class. I will miss Ian and Caleb from civ.. Angela, Mariah, Blake from German, Kirk, Heather, and Chioma from science, and well... no one from political science because that class kicked my trash. and schulzke smells like poo Ive decided.

This is what I felt like last night-

If you care to know why, well... I'll tell you.

A certain roommate of mine got cooking spray all over my computer while I was away at work for an hour. She said she moved it, and did the spraying on the complete opposite side of the table, but there was obvious Pam residue right next to where my computer was. Basically i was angry and told her so. She gave no apology, she just told me it was the risk I took for leaving my stuff out in the kitchen. ONE HOUR. And the worst part is she leaves her computer and blanket out almost every day. Thank goodness her and her boyfriend (awkward x 1,000,000) weren't in the kitchen today, because I may have just blown up at them.

And at the creamery this old dude pushed me and was really rude. And deacons were crowding up the line. And I failed my political science final which I studied pretty hard for. Lara didnt do well either.

But now we are off to the poetry night, and it will be wonderful. Free food, poetry, and besides, Mar Lar Ang and I wrote the best poems ever for it. They are about things like pooping, bad roommates, etc etc.

I have been missing the Netherlands again lately. It hits me at random times. I haven't been good about emailing my host family and I miss them so much. I made a mix for my friend Blake who is going to Vienna for spring/summer terms, and I put some dutch music on it, and some other stuff that reminded me of when I was in Europe etc. I hope he enjoys it. Its really REALLY random, but w/e.

I hope I can go to Vienna next summer. I am going to try to save my money and stuff, but if it comes down to choosing between Vienna and just going on vacation for a few weeks during the summer, I think I will just vacation with a couple friends. Lara loves Europe as much as I do, and we would have so much fun traveling together. I am jealous- Ang is going to Hebrew University in Jerusalem this summer!!! Maybe I should give her some moolah to get me something sweet from there to add to my collection- OR A FLAG. Ooh I love flags. What does the Israeli flag look like? I'll google it. . . oh yes. I want it.

Semester's end swiftly approaches

Its been a while since I updated this. That's most likely because I have had no time for anything lately. at 12:50pm today my last class ended, and after taking a glorious nap I realized, I have nothing to do. I should study, but considering the past few days have been study study study 2-3 hours of sleep then more studying, I think I am going to wait until the specified 'reading days' to do my hardcore learning for Finals. Instead, I plan on cleaning my room and relaxing. Listening to some musica, maybe watch a movie...

I think I did pretty well on my paper for H259. This is my favorite part. I wrote about how the scientific revolution and the scientific method were influential in shaping the literature, civilizations, and religions of the 15-19th centuries.

Rene Descartes, who provided a framework for the scientific method in his Discourse on the Method, believed that the “ultimate purpose of theoretical science was to serve the practical needs of human beings” (Philosophy). His method transcended the boundaries of the scientific into the sociological world. In the 18th century, method and reason were seen as tools for the liberation of humanity (Maxwell). This was an important factor in distinguishing not only between scientific and non-scientific, but also between “rational and irrational approaches to the ordering of the human world of politics and social institutions” (Schuster, ix). Because of this, more emphasis was placed on discovering what caused problems within society.
One example of this comes from early communists, and more particularly, Karl Marx. Marx’s ideas come from not only a challenging time of social unrest, but also from his methodical cause and effect analysis. He took the basic principles of the scientific method and applied them to the real world. His observation of the world around him and his study of history allowed him to form a hypothesis regarding social conflict. The Communist Manifesto was his (as well as the Communists’) testable transformation of civilization through a revolution of the proletariat. He concluded that the fault of discontented civilization lay with the bourgeoisie. He advocated that through the use of the proletariat as a revolutionary force, change towards a better state for all could be achieved (Marx). Although the end results of his experiment with civilization was by and large unsuccessful, it remains a good example of how methodical cause and effect analysis were integrated into political thought following the Scientific Revolution. Even today Marx’s system of sociological thought and his political theories are studied and respected for their continual relevance regarding class conflict.


Now considering this was written at between 1-6am on monday morning, I am pretty proud of it. That whole night...
